The Relevance of Close-Up Magic

Modern Science has uncovered much truth about the world in which we live and this is a fantastic thing in so many respects. Yet the mind still has a yearning for the fantastical. It is this yearning we try and sate when we watch a film or read a book or see a piece of theatre; a part of us watches because we want to come to a better understanding of ourselves and our lives through the actions of others - but we also watch because we want to be surprised, thrilled and astonished by the actions of the people before us.

Twists in the tale are so popular because they subvert everything you believed to be true about the world portrayed before you and help you to come to new understandings - and as anyone who has ever experienced this will attest, it is an incredible experience.

In my opinion, no other art satisfies this need quite as fully as close-up magic, and in my experience upon hearing that there is a magician moving from group to group most people are immediately excited. Why? Because this is a rare opportunity to witness the impossible - not at a distance mediated by their televisions or a theatre, but right underneath their noses and even in their hands.

When you feel solid metal twist and contort in your hand that is an occurrence which subverts everything you have been taught about the world and the way in which it functions. You are brought to a point of sheer impossibility and are both humbled and amazed.

And, as many of my audiences have told me, it is an experience which is remembered with delight for a lifetime - and it can be forever associated with your event.

What Will My Friends Experience When They See You Perform?

Typically you might expect your magician to have you take a card only to find it moments later. But imagine if instead that card (which you have signed, drew on or generally defaced such that you know it is unique to you) is lost in the pack and the pack handed to you. And imagine if I never touched those cards again - imagine if it was you who found your own card through a genuine use of your intuitive faculties and with absolutely no idea how you managed to do it.

Or consider throwing out a random sequence of letters and number - only to find that those letters and those numbers aren't quite as random as you first thought and that you have actually managed to divine the serial number of the bank note you have been holding all along!

Imagine also me spreading a pack of cards between my hands and showing you both the fronts and the backs of the pack, and imagine - with no swapsies or any of those other sneaky moves - if that pack of cards changed colour in its entirety - and imagine me handing you those cards for you to check out. There is nothing to find because they are a regular pack of cards.

This is just some of the magic which has drawn both the attention and praise of many well-respected named within the magic community and which has been astonishing my audiences for years.

Beyond cards, in my performances those participating feel solid metal contort in their hands; I reveal their thoughts and demonstrate heightened senses, and between all this signed cards inexplicably travel from one location to another, appear, mutate and much, much more.

I am always respectful of my audiences and aim to get as many people as possible involved and having a good time while I weave the amazement that only close-up magic can offer with the insights into why we tend to behave as we do that enjoy finding in a good story.
